30 Jan Cyber Essentials
Cyber Essentials is a Government backed scheme which is simple but very effective. It helps to protect your organisation against a range of the most common cyber attacks.
It is easy to think of cyber attacks still being the stuff of Science fiction, however in reality cyber attacks can be very basic and can be carried out by unskilled individuals. It’s equivalent to a thief trying to steal something from a store which has multiple security cameras. These sort of attacks come in many shapes and sizes and this is what Cyber Essentials is there to help prevent.
There are three levels of engagement and because not everybody has the time or resources to be able to develop a really secure cyber security system, Cyber Essentials was created to fit with whatever you’re able to sustain when it comes to cyber security. There are three levels of engagement;
- The simplest is to familiarise yourself with different cyber security terminology. You need to gain enough knowledge in order to begin securing your IT.
- You can go for your basic or entry level Cyber Essentials certification if you need more certainty within cyber security.
- OR if you’re wanting to go further with a certification, you can go for the Cyber Essentials Plus certification.
The self-assessment options will give you protection against a range of the most common cyber attacks.
The certification will give you peace of mind that your defences will protect your organisation against the most common types of cyber attacks. This is because the cyber attacks are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place already.
The process of acquiring the Cyber Essentials Certification will cost around £300 and it’s relatively straight forward. Whilst you’re doing the certification you can opt to buy as much or as little help as you want from the company you chose to certify you.
Cyber Essentials Plus
Cyber Essentials Plus still has the Cyber Essentials trademark simplicity of approach and the protections you need to put in place are the same but the verification of your Cyber Security is carried out by your certification body independently.
As the Cyber Essentials Plus is more rigorous, it may mean that you will need more support which may cost a little bit more.
The Cyber Essential scheme has been put in place to help protect companies and businesses against cyber attacks to IT systems. So unless your business has an in-house expert, it is advised that companies should enlist in the expertise of their IT or managed service provider.
